The roundtable discussion on green hydrogen projects, its bankability and potential applications – hosted by the Green Hydrogen Hub Viet Nam on 11 August 2025 in Ho Chi Minh City – welcome more than 50 representatives from the public and private sectors, bringing together diverse perspective from Vietnamese, German and international experts. The event was organized within the H2Uppp project and funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWE).

Bankability Key Highlights:

Dr. Marc Bednarz (Cohyba) highlighted that the bankability of a green hydrogen project depends on the strong integration of technology, engineering, and business. This means clearly defining the project’s end product, selecting suitable technologies, and using digital modelling to optimise performance; ensuring investment and operating costs are planned realistically to achieve competitive production prices; and building robust financial models, managing risks, securing offtake agreements, and arranging financing.

Mrs. Phung Phuong Lan (ODDO BHF) introduced Euler Hermes Covered Buyer Credit option, offering more flexible financing terms for green hydrogen projects. These include reduced requirements for the origin of goods, longer repayment periods, higher coverage ratios, and tailored repayment structures to make projects more attractive to investors.

Following the two presentations, a lively and engaging roundtable discussion took place with active participation from all attendees, including representatives from technology providers, financial institutions, project developers, industry experts in hydrogen applications, and local stakeholders. The discussion addressed both the opportunities and potential of hydrogen projects in Viet Nam, as well as the challenges businesses have faced when investing in this field. Participants also collaborated in exploring practical solutions to ensure the successful and economically efficient development of hydrogen projects.

Shipping and Maritime Session Highlights

The session shared insights on how green hydrogen could support the decarbonisation of shipping, with a presentation from Dr. Heino von Meye – PtX Hub and a panel discussion with representatives from the Maritime – Inland Waterway College No.2, the Ho Chi Minh City Maritime Administration, the Vietnam Maritime Corporation (VIMC), and HDF Energy who together discussed both the opportunities for adoption and the challenges ahead, particularly in terms of infrastructure, policies, and overall readiness for transition.

Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) Session Highlights

With a focus on pathways for producing sustainable aviation fuel to support the sector’s decarbonisation goals, the session featured a presentation from Dr. Torsten Schwab – PtX Hub along with a panel discussion involving representatives from Indefol, OWC  and AHK , during which speakers and panelists discussed opportunities for market growth alongside challenges related to production, supply, and the supportive policy environment needed to scale up.

The event brought together diverse perspectives from public and private sectors, paving the way for stronger cooperation in advancing Viet Nam’s green hydrogen future.
